22 experts from 10 countries reviewed 700 observational studies that tracked meat consumption and incidence of cancer. Risk of colorectal cancer could increase by 17% for every 100-gram (3.5-ounce) portion of red meat you eat on a daily basis. The report has said that each 50g portion of processed meat eaten per day increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%. For red meat, each 100g per day probably increases the risk by about 17%.

Recent research has shown that, because of certain compounds it contains, even lean red meat poses health risks. Red meat consumption has also been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in addition to cardiovascular disease.

The same positive changes away from a meat-based diet to a plant-based diet also conclusively lower the risk of cardiovascular disease—the first biggest disease killer in Australia and the Western world (cancer is the second). The more plant-based the diet, the lower the risk.

  • Recent research shows that carnitine, which is abundant in red meat, is converted by gut bacteria of predominantly meat-eaters into Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a compound that promotes atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries associated with cardiovascular disease): watch video.
  • TMAO from eating meat by predominantly meat-eaters is positively associated with and promotes cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis.
